The Beauty of God
Tuesday May 05, 2020
Tuesday May 05, 2020
In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the attribution of beauty to God was a rarity in both academic and popular theological literature. On this podcast, we explore why this is so and especially look at the way in which the beauty of God was a staple of theological reflection from the Scriptures down to the early modern era. The change in thinking took place in the eighteenth century and it is appropriate to reflect on one thinker from that era, namely, Jonathan Edwards, who is a fabulous representative of the older, classical thinking in this regard, namely, that ultimate and primal beauty is found in the Triune God.

Tuesday Apr 28, 2020
In this episode of Bede’s Podcast, we explore the literary and sermonic legacy of the evangelical Anglican historian Henry Melvill Gwatkin, who was born near the beginning of the Victorian era in 1844 and who died in 1916. He is most famous for his work on the early heresy of Arianism; but we look at other aspects of his historical work before gleaning some lessons from a sermon that he preached on Isaiah 6, a few days after the death of Queen Victoria.

Andrew Fuller and Baptism
Monday Apr 20, 2020
Monday Apr 20, 2020
On this podcast we remember and celebrate the baptism of Andrew Fuller on April 20, 1770, by recalling first the way that Baptists in the eighteenth century were the sole upholders of believer's baptism and what this entailed in terms of discrimination, even mild persecution. We then look at the way Andrew Fuller delineated the meaning of baptism in a tract entitled The Practical Uses of Christian Baptism (1802). Fuller especially highlighted baptism as the place of public dedication to God and saw it as a key element in preserving the church from worldliness. We close with a note about Fuller's view of baptism as a radical act and also as insufficient to preserve spiritual vitality. For the latter it was the presence of the Spirit that was necessary.
